What is a straddle?
A straddle is a call and a put at the same strike and expiry. It is about the size of the move, not the direction.
Long and short
A long straddle buys both. It loses at most the total premium, and gains if the price ends far from the strike in either direction. A short straddle sells both: it keeps the premium if the price ends near the strike, but losses can be very large, with no cap on the upside.
Breakevens
Upper breakeven = strike + total premium. Lower breakeven = strike - total premium. The buyer needs the price to end beyond one of these just to get the premium back, before costs and taxes. The ATM straddle price is also how the expected move is estimated.
