Theta decay: time value melting away
Theta is the amount an option loses in value each day just from time passing, all else equal.
Where the decay comes from
An option's price has intrinsic value (what it would pay now) and time value (the chance it gets better before expiry). Time value shrinks to zero at expiry, so the option loses it day by day.
It is not even
Decay is slow when expiry is far and speeds up in the last few days, fastest for at-the-money options. Out-of-the-money options can go to zero quickly if the price does not move.
Buyers and sellers
Buyers pay theta every day and need a big enough move. Sellers collect theta but accept gamma risk: a sudden large move can wipe out many days of collected premium. Neither side is free money.
