How options expiry works
At expiry an option stops trading and is settled. What happens next depends on the instrument.
Weekly and monthly
Index options have weekly and monthly expiries, and the list changes over time, so check the exchange calendar. Stock options expire monthly.
Settlement
Index options are cash settled: an in-the-money option pays its intrinsic value in cash. Stock options in India are physically settled, which means in-the-money positions can lead to delivery obligations. MCX Crude Oil and Natural Gas options settle into the futures contract. Check the contract specification with your broker.
Why expiry day is different
Time value melts fastest near expiry, and small price moves can swing option values a lot. In-the-money options held to expiry can also attract extra taxes and charges. Know the rules before you hold anything into expiry.
